A man was saved from drowning after his kayak capsized near Sunderland harbour.
The kayaker from Chester-le-Street was rescued by the RNLI at 10.45 this morning.
A nearby fishing boat had seen the incident and was able to support the kayaker until the lifeboats arrived minutes later.
Both lifeboats were diverted from their weekly training exercise after Humber Coastguard received a 999 emergency call
The casualty was taken back to the lifeboat station where he was given a warm drink and shower before going home.
