Man killed by lorry on A1(M) in County Durham is named by police

Police have named the man who was tragically killed when he was hit by a lorry on the A1(M) early yesterday.

Askar Abilpanov, 19, from Kazakhstan, was a pedestrian on the motorway where he was struck by a heavy goods vehicle (HGV).

The accident happened at about 1.55am on Saturday on the northbound carriageway, near Bowburn Services in County Durham.

Police are appealing to anyone who saw the incident, which involved a red HGV or a pedestrian in the roadway, to get in touch.

Witnesses are asked to call Durham Police on 101, quoting reference number DHM-19112016-0030.
