A DRIVER who suffered serious head injuries after his car collided with a lamppost remains in critical condition today.

 The man was taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital after the Citroen Saxo he was driving collided with a lamppost in Mount Pleasant, Washington, at about 10pm on Friday.

 Firefighters had to cut the man from the vehicle using hydraulic equipment.

 A Northumbria Police spokesman today said the man remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.
