A man who was involved in a horror smash which left his car on its roof has died.
Officers were called to Lizard Lane, Whitburn, near to the junction with Kitchener Road, where a silver Ford Focus had left the road on Saturday at about 1.53pm
The 31-year-old driver, who was the only person in the vehicle, was rushed to hospital suffering from serious life-changing injuries.
However, he sadly died from his injuries on on Monday afternoon.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “The 31-year-old driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was taken to hospital by paramedics suffering from serious life-changing injuries.
"The man sadly died on Monday afternoon."
“Police are appealing for any witnesses, or anyone with any information about the incident, to get in touch.”
The road was closed in both directions between the A1300 Redwell Lane junction and Kitchener Road for a number of hours while police dealt with the incident.
The crash is said to have happened on a bend near Kitchener Terrace and a dog walker nearby said they had seen a car overturn in a field.
Another witness described seeing a car on its roof along with ambulances and a helicopter at the scene.
A man, who was at Whitburn Golf Club, said he had seen several fire engines and police cars going past.
