The incident happened on Ebchester Bank, near The Derwent Walk, Consett, just after 7.30pm on Sunday, May 22.
A Ford Fusion collided with a stone wall and the driver, a 33 year-old local man, was airlifted to the RVI in Newcastle with serious head injuries. His passenger, a 33 year-old woman from Consett, was also taken to the RVI with an arm injury.
Sadly, yesterday evening the driver died from his injuries without regaining consciousness. The coroner has been informed and an inquest is expected to open in the next few days.
Durham Police say they hope to release further details of the deceased in due course.
