Man died from heart failure after struggle with police

A MAN who died following a struggle with police did so from heart failure, an inquest heard.

Leonard McCourt, 44, was arrested outside his house in Ash Crescent, Seaham, and put in the back of a van to be taken to Peterlee police station.

The second day of the inquest into Mr McCourt’s death, in September 2010, was told he made noises during the journey, but then fell silent.

Dr Stuart Hamilton, who carried out a post mortem examination, found he died of heart failure.

He added it was not possible to say when the death occured and the pepper spray used on him was not a direct cause of death.
