Man critical after Washington crash

A DRIVER is in critical condition after a crash in Washington.

Police were called to a smash on the Washington Highway at 9.10pm on Saturday.

A BMW, travelling eastbound, on the A182 crashed into barriers on the Chartershaugh Bridge between the Fatfield and Mount Pleasant slip roads.

The 27-year-old man who was driving the car was left with serious head injuries and was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI).

Police say his condition is described as critical but stable. He was the only person in the car.

Officers closed the Fatfield slip road onto the A182 Southbound four about three hours while they dealt with the crash.

Police would like to hear from anyone with information about the crash to contact them.

They would particularly like to speak to a man who saw the crash and spoke to the police about it.

He is described as white and in his 20s. He was wearing a black hoody.
