Man critical after being knocked over by a car in Sunderland

AN ELDERLY man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was knocked over by a car in South Hylton late last night.

The 75-year-old victim suffered serious head injuries when he was struck as he crossed South Hylton Bank outside Pennywell Comrades’ Club.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 11.18pm on Sunday, and the man was taken by ambulance to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary where he remains in a critical condition.

The road was closed for three hours to enable officers to investigate the scene and local diversions were put in place.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward anyone who was in the area at the time and witnessed the collision.
