FAILING to pay court fines landed a man back before magistrates.

John Mutimer, from Eglinton Street, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland, had £30 left outstanding on his account, Sunderland’s court heard.

He was initially ordered to pay out in September last year, after breaching a restraining order.

The court warned him he could be sent to prison, after skipping payments.

Susan Grey, defending, said it was one of two fines which the 33-year-old believed had been added together.

She admitted he had also missed “occasional” payments.

She added: “He asks you to accept his apologies and can pay the £30 within seven days.

“I think if you re-activate the prison sentence, he would be back from Durham prison sooner than he got there.”

Mutimer told the bench: “I have two daughters I don’t live with, and over Christmas it was a struggle making the payments, but after that I don’t have any other explanation.”

Chairman John Scott gave Mutimer seven days to pay up.
