A 35-year-old man is being questioned after an assault in a town centre which led police to cordon off a road.
Durham Constabulary was called to an area near to the Jobcentre on Station Road, near Front Street, Chester-le-Street sometime after 1pm today.
A man, thought to be in his late 20s, has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with what appear to be serious injuries.
A section of the street was cordoned off and police inquiries in the area are under way.
The force has said "there is no suggestion" the man has been stabbed,.
One local said: "The paramedics were working on him at the scene and apparently he looked in a bad way."
A 35-year-old local man has been arrested in connection with the serious assault.
He is in custody at Durham City police station.
