Man to appear in court charged with assault

A 35-year-old man will appear before Peterlee Magistrates court today after a 'serious' town centre assault.

The man has been arrested and charged with a section 18 assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent.

On Wednesday Durham Constabulary were called to an area near to the Jobcentre on Station Road, near Front Street, Chester-le-Street sometime after 1pm.

A man, thought to be in his late 20s, has been taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with what appear to be serious injuries.

A section of the street was cordoned off while police inquiries were carried out.
