Footage of the Seaking hovering over the river was captured by amateur cameraman Alan Teale.

Retired dock worker Mr Teale watched the rescue from his 16th floor flat in Astral House.

He said: “I just come in from the shops and heard the helicopter. I thought it was the roadworks, then I saw the yellow helicopter down the river.

“It was just in one place, so I thought it might be a rescue.”

The injured man was airlifted to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.
