Man, 19, held after road death

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a pedestrian was hit by a car on a country lane.

Police say a 30-year-old man was crossing the B1279, near his home village of Wheatley Hill, when he was struck by a green Citroen Xsara Picasso.

A 19-year-old man was arrested at the scene and was today helping police in Peterlee with their inquiries.

The incident happened at about 3pm yesterday. The victim was helped by firefighters who were first on the scene and tried to save him by giving CPR.

The man was taken to North Tees Hospital by ambulance but was later pronounced dead. He has not yet been named.

The road was cordoned off by police as inquiries into the collision were carried out.
