CHILDREN got a sweet treat as they decorated a giant gingerbread house.

As part of Sunderland City Council’s Countdown to Christmas, youngsters put the finishing touches to the sculpture, in The Bridges Shopping Centre.

However, they had to beware of the wicked witch who was lurking inside.

Councillor John Kelly, cabinet member for culture, said: “The Christmas activities taking place across the city have proved to be really popular. It is fantastic to see so many families really getting into the Christmas spirit.

“The giant gingerbread house is another fun and creative way for children to really use their imagination and enjoy the magic of Christmas in Sunderland.”

An Advent Christmas Calendar is now on display in the ground floor window of the City Library and Arts Centre, in Fawcett Street until Christmas Eve.
