The man died after police were called to reports of a disturbance inside the Loveshack nightclub in the Walkergate area of Durham city centre at 1am on Sunday morning.

When officers arrived they found doorstaff had detained two men and escorted them outside. Police said it became clear one of the men was in distress and having health difficulties.

He was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, but his condition deteriorated and a few hours after he was admitted to hospital he died.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out later today to establish a formal cause of death.

The victim, who is from Hetton, has not formally been identified.

Seven men were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and one on suspicion of a public order offence. They have now all been released on police bail, pending further enquiries, until the end of September.

Police said no charges have been brought at this stage.
