A group of students from Sunderland’s Barbara Priestman Academy were invited to St James’ Palace in London to be presented with their gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

The students, Andrew Larmer, Adam Shickle, Jordan Hackles, Caitlin Morris, Laura Ferguson, Nathan Defty and Ben Patrickson, rubbed shoulders with celebrities, including the Duke of Edinburgh himself, Prince Philip.

David Atkinson, Leader of Outdoor Learning at the Meadowside school said the students were fantastic ambassadors for the school, all very smart and polite.

The proud teacher said: “It was a lovely day and who would have thought seven years ago when we started Duke of Edinburgh Awards in school we would have seven autistic students achieving gold.”

He said he wanted to thank everyone who had supported the young Duke of Edinburgh students.
