London Olympics has shielded North East sport from even deeper cuts

OLYMPIC medal winner Jonathan Edwards has claimed the London Olympics has shielded sports and leisure funding in the North East from even greater cuts.

The gold-medal-winning triple jumper, who studied and lives in the North East, said firms in the region were also benefiting from building contracts thanks to the games.

Speaking at the launch of a new leisure development in Redcar, Mr Edwards said the Olympics had bunked sport and health further up the Government’s agenda.
