Loan interest in Sunderland youngsters with club set to grant more opportunities next season

Sunderland plan to send more of the club's younger players out on loan next season to give them experience of senior football.

One of those to enjoy a successful spell away on loan last season was striker Andrew Nelson, who spent the second half of the campaign at Scottish Championship side Falkirk, scoring four goals in 16 appearances.

Goalkeeper Max Stryjek, who had a spell at Accrington Stanley, was loaned out along with Josh Robson, who went to Norwegian side Notodden FK and defender Tom Beadling, who enjoyed a spell at Scottish side Dunfermline Athletic.

Sunderland academy boss Jimmy Sinclair is pleased the club has a growing reputation for sending their promising youngsters out on loan and admits the likes of left-back Denver Hume and attacking midfielder Luke Molyneux - who both made their debuts in the 3-0 win over Wolves - could be sent out next season to gain experience.

Earlier in the season Nelson signed a new one-year deal to extend his stay at Sunderland and he is due back in training with the rest of the Sunderland squad in late June. Nelson has also enjoyed loan spells at Hartlepool United and Harrogate Town.

The Echo understands there is loan interest again in Nelson, including from Falkirk. With Sunderland currently without a manager, the new boss will have to assess his squad before deciding which youngsters to send out on loan.

When asked about Nelson's loan success, Sinclair said: "He has done really well.

"It’s an important strand in a young players development to go out on loan and I think we’ve done really well this year, and hope to do better still next year.

"I think we got something like eight or nine players we put out on loan for different reasons.

"But if that loan process goes well, as it did with Jordan Pickford for example, then the fruits of that labour are great.

"I’m really pleased that the club is now getting a reputation for putting good young players out on loan and giving them the opportunity to experience men’s football.

"Next year we hope that people like Denver Hume and Luke Molyneux and others will have that same pathway."
