Lifeboatmen up with the larks

LIFEBOAT volunteers were called after an unmanned fishing vessel was spotted drifting towards the quayside.

Sunderland RNLI was alerted at 5am yesterday, after Port Control reported the eight-metre-long vessel close to Corporation Quay.

The Atlantic 85 Inshore Lifeboat James Dugdale took the boat back to moorings near Fish Quay.

Senior helmsman Paul Nicholson said: “The concern was that this vessel would end up colliding with one of the commercial barges on Corporation Quay or the yachts moored at Sunderland Yacht Club.”
