LIFEBOAT volunteers from Sunderland’s RNLI Station answered their 40th emergency call of the year when they were scrambled to help the crew of a commercial fishing boat.

The rescue mission was launched shortly after 3.15pm yesterday when officers received an emergency radio call saying the vessel was drifting after suffering gearbox failure four miles offshore.

Officers launched the lifeboat from Sunderland station and the crew were able to reach the three-man crew, from Hendon, who were then towed back to the city’s Fish Quay.
