LANDING a main part in one of television’s most popular drama shows was a dream come true for a young Wearside actor.
Sunderland thespian Amy Cameron has spoken of her joy at gaining a part in the ITV detective drama, Vera, which has been filming the next series in Horden and Peterlee, .
Amy, 22, from Barnes, appeared in the last series, starring Blenda Blethyn, which was aired last month.
The role of Karen Marsden, who is abducted after her father is shot dead, was the first job Amy secured after finishing her acting degree at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Filmed last year, the former Sunderland High School pupil said working on Vera was an amazing experience.
She said: “It was absolutely unbelievable to get that part.
“I couldn’t believe it was happening. I spent most of the time just watching Brenda Blethyn in awe.
“It was also cool to be in the North East filming in places which are familiar to me.
“It was great experience and a brilliant part. Hopefully, I will continue to get some good roles.”
Since filming Vera, Amy, who was a pupil at Barnes Junior School, has also had roles in several theatre productions, as well as other television appearances in Casualty, Doctors and Skins.
Becoming an actress was the only thing Amy ever considered as a career, and she been supported by her family and friends, who are all very proud of her achievements so far.
She said: “It was all I ever wanted to do.
“It was never about wanting to be famous or anything – it was just growing up I was obsessed with reading, watching films and going to the theatre, it all seemed like such good fun and I wanted to be able to entertain people like that.”
Although Amy, who now lives in Manchester, says she loves the buzz she gets from performing live on stage, her career dreams are to clinch more parts in television dramas.
She said: “I grew up watching TV dramas and I would like to get more roles in good shows.”
