Lidl will open its rebuilt and refurbished shop in Ryhope Road, Grangetown from 8am on Thursday, with free samples to be offered to customers checking out the new shop on its first day.

The revamped store is part of the firm’s expansion and regeneration plans across the UK, which will see its portfolio rise from 640 to 1,500.

The size of the Grangetown store has doubled to 2,268sq m and features a bakery, longer dual-style tills, customer toilets, baby changing facilities and parking for cars and bicycles.

Ten new jobs have been created by the larger store.

The sustainable building has been designed with a glass facade, with sensor controlled exterior sun blinds operate to deal with the unwanted heat from the sun.

Its electrical lighting system is made up of LED fittings, which are more than 50% more energy efficient than a traditional system.

Lidl UK’s regional head of property, David Murphy, said: “We would like to thank all those who have played a part in improving our Lidl store in Grangetown.

“It is fantastic for us to be able to create more jobs and investment opportunities in the area, and we can’t wait to start serving our multi-award winning products to the local community once again.”

Mayor of Sunderland Alan Emerson will cut the ribbon for at Thursday’s opening ceremony.

Special offers will include 30% of selected meat, poultry and fish, 50% off selected fruit and vegetables and 40% off selected chilled food during a three week run from January 19 to mark the opening.

The firm recently opened a new store in Houghton and already runs stores in Durham Road, Sunderland, Roker, Peterlee and the Arnison Centre in Durham.
