Leisure centres facing cuts axe

SIX leisure centres could close as a council looks to deal with the Government’s cuts and save £125million over the next four years.

The list, which includes Abbey Leisure Centre, in Pity Me, and Sherburn, has been drawn up by Durham County Council from its 18 centres.

The move could save the authority about £1.2million, with focus put on sites that are felt to offer poorest value for money.

Others which could close are in Ferryhill, Coxhoe, Crook and Ushaw Moor.

Although the council says it can no longer fund the centres, it has been suggested a third party could retain them at no cost to the authority.

The report is to be discussed by the council’s cabinet on March 2, with the members to be asked for permission to consult on the closures.
