LATEST NEWS: Three elderly women cut free after bus crash

THREE elderly women had to be cut free by rescue crews after a crash involving a bus and a car.

The incident happened when a Stagecoach single-decker bus was in a collision with a Fork Ka on Durham Road and Thornholme Road, Sunderland at about 12.15pm yesterday.

Police, fire and ambulance services were scrambled to the scene and road diversions were put in place while the driver and two passengers, all women aged 81, 79 and 73, were freed from the Ka.

They were all taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment, however, their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The driver of the bus was not injured, however, some of the six passengers received minor injuries.

The road reopened at 2.30pm. Enquiries into the crash are continuing.
