DRIVERS are facing a miserable trip home this evening as roads remain closed and heavy rain continues.

Stretches of major routes have been closed and heavy rain is making conditions hazardous for motorists. Road closures and problems in Sunderland include:

•The A19 is closed northbound at the A1018 and at Testos roundabout

•The A19 southbound is now open – but the weight of traffic is causing gridlock so drivers are advised to avoid it if possible, or be prepared for delays.

•The A1231 eastbound and the A195 junction with A1231 are passable with care.

•The A690 at the Houghton Cut has now re-opened but traffic is still heavy.

•Silksworth Lane is now closed to traffic from the Barnes gyratory due to localised flooding of the road and a number of houses.

Metros, trains and buses are running without issue.

Northumbria Police has released advice for drivers, urging them to take care on the roads this evening.

A spokesman for the force said: “The rain is expected to continue throughout the evening into the early hours of Tuesday and we are advising the public to be prepared for surface water flooding, an increased likelihood of river flooding and a disruption to travel.

“Officers are advising the public to be prepared as best they can for the weather and to monitor local media and agency websites for up to date news and information.

“Motorists are being advised to take care on roads, drive safely and watch out for standing water. Drivers are urged to allow extra time for journey, to use their lights appropriately and drive according to the conditions.”

He added: “Drivers are urged not to take risks and drive through areas that have been flooded.

“Rush hour this evening is expected to be busy and we would ask that drivers stagger their journey times, as much as possible, to ease congestion on the roads.”

Extra officers are out on patrols throughout the force area helping motorists and the public and working with local authorities and other agencies to minimise disruptions on the road networks.
