POLICE have named a man killed in a crash as Jay McCormick, 19, of Pinewood Avenue, in Washington.

He was pronounced dead at Sunderland Royal Hospital on Sunday night after the Suzuki Swift he was in smashed into driveway in Ashdale, Mount Pleasant, near Penshaw.

Another man, 23, remained in a critical condition in Newcastle’s RVI after suffering serious injuries at the time of the last police update.

Investigations are still are ongoing into the crash, which happened just before 9pm.

Two men, aged 25 and 34, were arrested in connection with the collision.

The 25-year-old was treated for injuries at Sunderland Royal Hospital. The other man was unhurt.

Firefighters from Washington and Hebburn were called to the scene and used specialist cutting equipment to free the men from the car.

Police are investigating why the car left the road and collided with three parked cars, including a Vauxhall Corsa, and ploughed into the driveway of a nearby house.
