WEARSIDE’S sporting stars will get the chance to shine at the very first Sunderland Echo Sports Awards.
This is the first year the awards will take place and it will give Echo readers the chance to nominate their local sporting heroes.
Coinciding with the Olympic torch passing through Sunderland before the London Games, the evening at the Stadium of Light will celebrate sporting achievement in the region.
It will take place on June 14 with nominations being sent in by Echo readers.
The judging panel will be made up of ex-Black Cats star Marco Gabbiadini, Echo editor Rob Lawson and Kevin Gatens, from the sponsor EDF Energy.
The deadline for entries is May 29 and judging will take place on May 31.
The categories are:
•16-18 Team Award
•Special Achievement Award
•Youth 16-18 Sportsperson Special Achievement Award
•Sports Official / Referee Award
•Coach or Mentor Award
•Contribution to Disability Sports Award
•Lifetime Achievement Award
•Unsung Hero Award
•Performance of the Year Award
•The Ian Laws Award for a special contribution to sport in Sunderland, at the Editor’s discretion
•Sports Personality of Year Award
All nominees must be aged over 18 years with the exception of the Young Persons Award where the age band shall be 16-18 years.
Nominees must not be employees of Northeast Press Limited or the Sunderland Echo.
Nominees must currently perform or compete in an Accredited Association or League.
The sporting achievement must have been completed between June 2011 and June 2012.
All nominees agree to abide by the rules of the competition and that the decision of the judges will be final.
All nominees understand that by entering the competition they are agreeing to be involved in any associated publicity and photographs being taken.
Please check with the nominee before submission that they are happy for their photograph to be taken and published.
In the event a nominee aged under 18 years is shortlisted and invited to the Awards Ceremony he/she must be accompanied by parent / guardian / coach or another adult aged over 18 years.
Only two shortlisted nominees will be invited to the awards ceremony in each category
Shortlisted nominees will get two tickets to the award ceremony – one for themselves and one for a guest.
