OPPOSITION councillors had a bad night in Sunderland as Labour completed a near clean sweep in the city.

Sitting Tory councillor John Wiper lost his seat in Fulwell, while independent leader Colin Wakefield was ousted in Copt Hill.

Labour also picked up the Barnes seat, which had been vacated by former Tory leader Lee Martin.

The council elections took place on the same night as the General Election, increasing the turnout – which naturally favours Labour in Tyne & Wear.
