Labour want best deal for Sunderland

Tom Brown (May 1) seems to have forgotten that the fundamental basis for any debate is the facts. Biased opinions are just not good enough.

I am referring to his comment on if Labour got elected. He said they would borrow “billions like the previous Labour Government under Blair and Brown”.

The facts reveal Mr Brown’s rhetoric is unrealistic. When Labour gained power, at the time he is talking about, the outgoing Tory Government had left the UK in a state of disrepair.

Public services were decrepit, the NHS was on its knees, infrastructure neglected and the national debt stood at £350billion. (Has anyone else noticed how history is repeating itself).

Labour spent billions, wisely, to rectify the damage and still managed to reduce the national debt accrued by the Tories.

As for government borrowing, Labour’s annual spend did not exceed the Thatcher government spend in eight of her 11 years.

As I’ve said before, the financial crisis was not caused by public sector borrowing, but by private sector indebtedness on a grand scale.

Without any evidence to support his comments, Mr Brown said Labour would increase taxes on hard working families. There is no hint of that happening in Labour’s published policies.

However, if re-elected the Chancellor threatens genuine people with increases in VAT, income tax and national insurance to fund his failed austerity policy.

The Labour Party fully supports Brexit and wants the best deal for the people of Sunderland.

It’s essential our three MPs, who have shown their excellence since elected, are there to represent our city and its people.

It’s important we don’t let Brexit overlook the General Election.

With their regressive policies, the Tories have declared war on the working class.

This is a great opportunity for us to help ourselves by voting them out of office.

Now that’s what I call common sense.
