LABOUR took UKIP’s seat in the Cleadon and East Boldon ward for South Tyneside Council after winning last night’s by-election.

In a closely-fought contest, Margaret Meling prevailed with 991 votes, ahead of Fiona Milburn (Con) who received 899 votes and Colin Campbell (UKIP), who polled 666 votes.

Coun Meling narrowly failed to take a seat in the ward last year after defeat at the hands of Conservative councillor Jeff Milburn

The election was fought for the seat, which became vacant after the death of UKIP councillor David Potts in April.

The victory made it a good night for Labour. The ruling party having also won the vacant seat in the Primrose ward, further strengthening its grip on the Town Hall by holding 49 of the 54 seats available.
