Outspoken columnist Katie Hopkins caused upset on Twitter today when she was accused of sending an “insensitive” message to Phillip Schofield as he was getting ready to attend Denise Robertson’s funeral.
The This Morning presenter was one of many famous faces who travelled to Sunderland to say farewell to the much-loved agony aunt.
Phillip, who was comforted by his co-presenter Holly Willoughby as he shed tears outside Sunderland Minster, tweeted a picture of a black tie, posting: “I hate this tie, every time I put it on I’m sad!”
Katie, who often causes controversy with her opinions, responded to him, saying: “then wear a different tie you daft a**e”
The message angered many Twitter users.
One posted: “its for denise’s funeral.. how insensitive”
But Katie didn’t back down, responding with: “in death, must we pretend to have got along in life?”
Another Twitter user said: “oi leave Phillip alone! He’s more likeable than you, he can put anything he wants to”
Yet again, sharp-tongued Katie responded, saying: “managing to tweet through his tears. Multi-tasking right there”.
Other users commented on the former Apprentice contestant’s “constant need to cause controversy” and her “need to be acerbic”.
Phillip was among hundreds of friends, family, fans and colleagues, who paid their final respects to Denise today.
The agony aunt died on March 31, at the age of 83, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
