Katie Bulmer-Cooke: Make social media work for you

It's been a busy one on the social media front this week, as I've been out and about delivering my social media workshop to businesses in the region.

It’s ace to see how many businesses are becoming more proactive when it comes to social media, and putting time and effort into maximising it’s potential.

Frequently, I hear businesses say ‘yes we are on social media’, but the truth is that simply being ‘on it’ just isn’t enough.

Creating an account and knocking out the odd post here and there just won’t cut it in an area that moves so fast that you can blink and miss a social post.

Increasingly more and more businesses are becoming savvy to the fact that social media is a full time job if you want to make it a success and ultimately turn posts into sales.

There needs to be at least one person in every business, whether they are in-house or outsourced, who is responsible for making social media a success.

So many people I work with say they think that social media is baffling and they don’t know what they should be posting.

The reality is that social media can be very much likened to playing the TV classic ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’…it’s only easy when you know the answer.

If you’re a business owner and you’re not getting switched on with social then you are totally missing out, in a huge way.

When I started my business 14 years ago I used to pound the pavements, pushing flyers through the doors of the houses in my local area, without ever really knowing who was on the other side, but now the things that Facebook and Instagram alone can do mean that businesses can be really specific about who they want to target.

Social media isn’t going to go away, it’s only going to grow and grow, and without a shadow of a doubt, any businesses that doesn’t keep up to date will most certainly be left behind.
