A GROUP of all-conquering karate kids warmed up for a shot at international honours with a great performance at a major competition.

Members of Boldon’s Dokan Karate Club continue their 2014 season with more victories at Penrith, Cumbria, where they were taking part at the Chojinkai open style karate championship.

Forty-two youngsters from the club took part in the event – ahead of 17 of them representing England at the World Shotokan Karate Unions Championships, being held in Kosovo next month.

The club finished the day with 12 golds, 21 silver and 21 bronze medals.

The club has more than 150 youngsters training in Boldon, Whitburn and Sunderland.

Chief instructor Kevan Mitchinson said: “It has been a really busy start to the year but this was a great performance.

“This was a big event, watched by around 1,000 spectators, and just what the squad needed, a hard tester as they prepare for the English Nationals and then the World Championships.

“There were some outstanding performances throughout the day.

“They are a really dedicated bunch of youngsters and they are getting the rewards for all their hard work in training.”
