A JURY is considering its verdict in the case of a Sunderland lorry driver accused of causing the death of a cyclist by his careless driving.

Paul Dove, 54, from Aldwych Road, Farringdon, was at the wheel of a Mercedes articulated lorry which crashed into Christopher Griffiths, 50, as he rode his bike on the A19, near Billingham in January last year.

Teesside Crown Court heard Mr Griffiths was cycling in the margin of the dual carriageway road, to the left of the rumble strip, and several drivers told the court they managed to pass him safely, although they thought it was unwise for him to be riding there.

Dove, who denies the charge, said he was between the white lines at all times and did not drive over the rumble strip.
