Junior cricket: Gabriel shines brightly in Washington success

Gabriel Hebron’s outstanding knock of 56, with seven fours and a six, was backed by Raj Singh (32no) as Washington posted 117-3 in their 15 overs.

Joe Blacklock hit seven fours in 40, but Eppleton could only make 93-3, Joe Bute adding 16 and Charlie Ord 14 as Singh pounced twice.

Joe Riley hit 32, backed by 22 apiece from James Wilson and Vaibhav Tiwari, in Chester-le-Street’s 112-4. Sunderland fell short on 99-4 in their reply, despite Joseph Stuart’s 55-ball 42, with four boundaries, 21 from Sam Brigham and Aidan Dixon’s 17.

In the South East Division, Seaham Harbour edged home by three runs against Murton.

Harbour made 91-9, thanks largely to runs down the order from Rhys Slater (15no), Jamie Blackford (13) and Henry Sennett (13) as Niall Ball (3-18), Jed Jarvis (2-22) and Luke Thompson (2-19) impressed with the ball.

In reply, opener Thompson fired 29 and Daniel Cook added an unbeaten 11, but Murton fell shy on 88-9. Slater grabbed 4-8 in four outstanding overs, with Caleb Lowerson-Marshall striking twice.

Ryhope dismissed Peterlee for 47 as Nathan Bennett bagged 5-7, before Josh Dick’s unbeaten 30 steered Ryhope home by eight wickets.

Jake McCoy (26) top-scored in Horden’s 63 all out, as Jonathan Robson took 3-17 for Castle Eden, who had a struggle to seal the win by three wickets, opener Ben Simpson carrying his bat for 44. Evan Roberts (3-11) and Will Iceton (2-11) impressed with the ball for Horden.

In the George Peacock Memorial Cup, Whitburn defeated neighbours Wearmouth by 18 runs.

Howell Hurst (27) led Whitburn to 74-7, as Ryan McLoughlin plundered three wickets for just nine runs, then McLoughlin’s 18 could only help the Carley Hill side post 56-5 in reply, despite a 33-run opening partnership with James Colley. Amy Hearn took 3-6

The Sunderland Road side then replied with 85-6 to lose by 28 runs, despite 24 apiece from openers Oliver Sampson-Barnes and Joseph Forster.Elliott Campbell grabbed two wickets.
