Junior cricket: Durham Under-15 girls off to a flier in County Championship

Durham Under-15 girls impressed in an eight-wicket victory over Cheshire at Sacriston yesterday to open their County Championship season in style.

Durham won the toss and chose to field, a decision which paid off as Cheshire were dismissed for 104 in 37.4 overs.

Erim Denyer grabbed 3-16, while Jessica Woolston took 2-13 and Ella Tomys 2-14.

Madeline Atkinson fired an unbeaten 38, with five boundaries, off 76 balls to steer Durham toi victory in the 23rd over, supported by 34 from Holly Spoors, who also hit five fours.

* Whitburn Under-18s secured an eight-wicket win over Felling in Group Two of the George Peacock Memorial Cup.

Ryan Lumsdon top-scored with 32 not out in Felling’s 15-over total of 107-4, with Ben Kennedy, Finlay Hearn and Elliott Hearn all taking wickets.

Elliott Hearn (23), Ben Markham (35no) and Kennedy (33no) then led the Villagers home in 12.3 overs.

Sacriston beat Washington by seven wickers in the Fred Blunt Trophy’s Group One.

Ajay Singh Rai fired four fours and two sixes in a brilliant 58 to lead Washington to 101-4, backed by Finn Hebron (16), with Tommy Bell taking 2-11.

Charlie Winn (20), Callum Dodds (18no), Josh Lowes (19) and Bell (21no) guided Sacriston to victory in 11.3 overs, with Tyler Dutton grabbing 2-27. Thomas Lander also struck.
