It was a comment which every judge in the WOW247 Awards agreed upon because the standard of entries this year was so high.

Judges met to pick a shortlist for the competition which honours the best in Wearside and South Tyneside arts, culture, hospitality and leisure scenes.

Thanks to the readers of the Sunderland Echo and Shields Gazette, we were inundated with entries and that made for an impressive line-up of contestants.

We won’t be revealing the winners until the WOW247 glittering finals night on Thursday, February 25, at The Best Western Roker Hotel. From best restaurant to children’s activity or venue. There’s a champion in each section.

The winners will be following in the footsteps of last year’s champions, including the Empire Theatre in Sunderland, Bents Park, Jarrovians Rugby Club, Little Haven Hotel and Dunes.

The awards are held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7.

The competition is backed by UK Asbestos Specialists (UKasl), The Marsden Grotto Private Beach and Downey’s Fish and Chip Restaurant in Roker and Seaham.

Watch out for coverage of the finale in the Echo. We will reveal a full list of all the winners on the day after the awards night.

We will be carrying a supplement filled with reaction and interviews with all of our winners.

Watch out for that in the week after the competition.
