THE North East’s leading business organisation has welcomed a drop in the number of people looking for work in the region -– but warned more needs to be done.
There were 144,000 people looking for work in the last month, up slightly on February but still an overall fall of 9,000 over the quarter.
North East Chamber of Commerce director of policy Ross Smith said: “We have had some excellent news from within our manufacturing and engineering sector over the last fortnight with Nissan, Calsonic Kansei, Newcastle Offshore Group and SSI all embarking on expansion programmes and adding to the general positivity within the business community.”
The announcements would stand the region in good stead for the future.
“While we’re still to experience the full impact of the public sector cutbacks these announcements suggest the North East has plenty to be optimistic about,” said Mr Smith.
