A super stylist who struggled to gain employment has scooped a national award, just six months after getting a job.
Like many school-leavers, Ashleigh Copeland, 18, from Seaburn, faced a number of knock-backs by potential employers as she sought work.
But Ramsay and Johnson salon, in Blandford Street, Sunderland, spotted her potential and now the teenager has won the junior section of an award by training provider, BL Hairdressing.
She impressed judges with a Cheryl Cole-inspired hairstyle and will now take part in a photoshoot with celebrity stylist Charley McEwen, who has styled barnets for the stars of Strictly Come Dancing, as part of her prize.
The former Monkwearmouth School pupil said: “I’ve never done anything like this before, so I was totally surprised to win.
“Working on styling hair for a photoshoot with Charley is a great opportunity.”
She added: “I’d been trying to get a job for months and had taken part in loads of trial days at salons. I was over the moon to be offered a place here.”
Ashleigh’s follicle creation was photographed by Scott Spock and featured a multi-tonal hairstyle which had been set in heated rollers for volume.
Ashley Dembry, owner of the salon said: “This award is great recognition for Ashleigh as an up- and-coming stylist. It was a photographic competition and the judges said they were impressed by the eye-catching style and attention to detail.
“Some juniors come in and they just have that X factor. Ashleigh has picked things up really quickly, she has great attention to detail and clients love her.”
