The number of people looking for work on Wearside fell to its lowest level in six years last month.

There were 5,865 people receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance – paid only to those classed as actively looking for work – in the Sunderland local authority area in November.

That represents a drop of 274 on October’s figure of 6,136 and is the lowest figure since July 2008, when there were 5,862 claimants in the city.

The number of claimants has fallen by 2,132 since the beginning of this year.
