An man who turned to drink and drugs after the breakdown of his relationship went on a £1,870 shoplifting spree.

Christopher Wooton, of Forster Street, Roker, who is 39 today, admitted eight thefts in a six-day period in October.

Jonathan Harley, prosecuting at Sunderland Magistrates’ Court, said the thefts included £43 worth of perfume from Debenhams in Sunderland, four sets of headphones worth £1,430 from Apple, a £199 vacuum cleaner from Lakeland and three candles, worth £69, from Collectables, in the Metro Centre. In South Shields, he visited Superdrug, Sainsbury’s and Iceland, stealing £30 of fake tan, 10 steaks worth £80, and two £10 bags of jumbo king prawns.

Angus Westgarth, defending, said Wooton had used cocaine and alcohol and lost his job after a painful split.

When he had been unable to clear a drugs debt, he received “quite a beating” and had stolen to raise money. He has since turned his life around and was given a one-year community order with £1,274 fines and costs.
