Leading pub chain JD Wetherspoon is expanding the beverage side of its business by selling takeaway teas and coffees.

The firm, which sells more than 50 million cups of coffee each year, announced it will serve takeaway hot drinks at its 950 pubs.

The chain has three pubs in Sunderland and two in Hartlepool, as well as pubs in Seaham, Peterlee, Houghton, Washington and South Shields.

At the moment, tea and coffee is served mainly as part of the chain's breakfast menu, will refillable coffees alongside a traditional English breakfast a popular option.

Chief executive John Hutson said: "Our coffee is extremely popular with customers. We sell around a million cups a week in our pubs across the UK, and believe customers will welcome the opportunity to enjoy a takeaway cup too, at 99p."
