Jailed: The heroin addict who stole air ambulance charity bag from doorstep

A heroin addict who went on a two-day stealing spree has been jailed for eight months.

David Jones stole from two shops and a doorstep on the first day, and stole again from a supermarket the day after, Durham Crown Court heard.

“The first offence relates to a bag of clothing, which a resident of the Peterlee area left on her doorstep,” said Shaun Dryden, prosecuting. “Her intention was for it to be collected to raise funds for the North East Ambulance Service.

“At about 2pm the same day, Jones entered the Poundland store, in Peterlee town centre, and stole a bottle of fabric conditioner. At 4pm he was seen on CCTV in a nearby Asda store stealing two joints of beef, valued at £30. Police were called, and during a routine search, Jones was found to be carrying a lock knife.”

The court heard Jones was bailed, but arrested again the next day.

“On that occasion he stole a tray of lager from an off-licence in Easington,” said Mr Dryden.

Jones, 30, of Argent Street, Easington, admitted four offences of theft, and one offence of carrying a bladed article, between January 21 and 22.
