INVESTIGATIONS by health chiefs into a possible outbreak of food poisoning at a Sunderland City Council buffet are continuing.
Staff from the authority were struck down with diarrhoea and vomiting after attending a two-day event at the Civic Centre.
It has now been confirmed that 18 people of the 25 at the event were affected by the outbreak.
The Health Protection Agency, which was called in to investigate, said it has yet to identify the source of the illness.
The council said all but one of the 18 people who had suffered symptoms have returned to work.
Assistant Head of Street Scene Norma Johnston said; “As part of the ongoing investigation with health partners into the causes of this outbreak of illness, each of the 25 staff who attended either of these two, separate internal meetings have been contacted.
“The caterer for both of these events is fully co-operating with the investigation to establish the cause of the outbreak of illness.”
