AN inquest was due to open today into the death of a Washington man involved in an accident while on holiday in Rome.

Corey Atkinson, 21, died in an Italian hospital on April 21, after he was knocked down by a car while crossing a road.

Sunderland’s Senior Coroner Derek Winter is expected to open and adjourn the inquest into Mr Atkinson’s death until a date in October.

His funeral is due to take place at 11.15am on May 18 in Christ Church, Lumley, followed by interment in Lumley Cemetery.

The family have asked for donations in lieu of flowers to road safety charity Brake and a donation box will be provided at the church.
