Durham’s Gala Theatre is set to welcome a bright new beginning for its cinema, with the announcement of a new partnership.
The development comes as Durham County Council reveals it has appointed the UK’s largest independent cinema operator, Picturehouse Cinemas, to bring a new approach to cinema at the venue.
As part of the collaboration, Picturehouse will take over film and event programming for Gala Cinema immediately.
It is envisaged that the partnership will also lead to the development of new cinema screens and new-style catering at Gala.
Stephen Howell, Durham County Council’s head of culture and sport, said: “We are very excited to be working alongside Picturehouse Cinemas to develop our cinema offer.
“The company’s balance of artistic and commercial cinema matches perfectly our vision for the future of Gala.
“We are confident that working with Picturehouse will have additional benefits for us too, including increased cinema marketing activity.”
