Major improvements to a bridge through one of the region’s busiest roads has been completed.
Milburngate Bridge in Durham was reopened at 6.30am on Saturday after almost seven weeks of work and ahead of schedule.
It came ahead of a packed weekend of events for the city, including the Durham Streets Summer Festival and North East Military Vehicle Rally at the DLI Museum and Durham Art Gallery and ahead of the start of the new school year.
The bridge maintenance programme, carried out by Durham County Council, involved a major renovation of the structure which carries about 48,000 vehicles a day.
Work continued around the clock with a number of overnight closures last week to get the project finished ahead of deadline, following severe weather last weekend.
The council has thanked members of the public for their patience and co- operation during the project.
