THE Echo’s annual Christmas Carol Service hit the right notes tonight as hymns rang out at Sunderland Minster.

Among those giving readings were the Mayor, Coun Bob Heron, council leader Paul Watson and Echo editor John Szymanski.

A sermon was taken by Reverend Canon Sheila Bamber, the minister provost.

A festive hymn sheet including Ding Dong Merrily on High, Come and Join the Celebration, Away in a Manger, Silent Night and O Little Town of Bethlehem also featured.

After the service a collection was made for the Mayor’s charities, which include the Alzheimers Society, the Sunderland Samaritans and Fibromyalgia, while guests enjoyed a glass of mulled wine.

Echo editor John Szymanski said: “As ever, the Christmas Carol Service was a fantastic night, which put everyone in the mood for Christmas.”
