HUNDREDS of families braved the wind and rain for Sunderland’s annual Easter egg rolling competition.

About 800 children aged 11 and under took part in the Penshaw Bowl, rolling their eggs down the hill in the shadow of Penshaw Monument and bidding to win prizes, donated by supermarket giant Sainsbury’s.

“The Penshaw Bowl was a great day,” said Jessica Regnart, creative development manager with event organiser Sunderland Live.

“We’ve had hundreds of children and their families turn out with their beautifully-decorated eggs.”

Mayor and Mayoress of Sunderland Coun Bob and Juliana Heron kicked off the event.

City council cabinet secretary Coun Mel Speding was also in attendance.

“It has been a really good day and we have had a great turn-out – the car park is packed,” he said.

“It’s good to see so many children and mums and dads turning out to support the event.”

As well as the egg rolling itself, an activity marquee in Herrington Country Park offered face painting, egg decorating and a range of Easter crafts.
