Not only did they provide fun for the people taking part, they also gave hours of enjoyment to the audiences who went along to see the shows, many of which were truly glittering in their presentation.

For those involved in staging the shows, life-long friendships were often formed, and in some cases – even marriage.

Looking at today’s photographs, it’s obvious that Wearside had, and no doubt still does, a wealth of acting talent, involving both the young and old alike.

The images show performers displaying their talents in musicals, comedies and serious plays.

However, it not just the people on the stage who made the shows what they were, let’s not forget the army of workers who helped out behind the scenes or in the front of house.
